Albany Texas – A Film Friendly and Historic Preserve America Community

Welcome to Albany, Texas!

Albany, Texas, oldest town on the Northwest Frontier, has strong ties to its past. It is located in Shackelford County at the junction of US Highways 180 and 283. The Texas Forts Trail runs through the town on its way from Fort Griffin to Fort Phantom Hill.

In 1874, settlers sought law and order apart from the rough and tumble town of Fort Griffin and moved the county seat 16 miles south to a location they named “Albany.” They retained strong ties to the historic fort, however, and citizens of Albany are still intimately involved in documenting and restoring the site.

The Old Jail Art Center

The Old Jail Art Center

The first public structure in Albany was a strong stone jail. Eleven years later, in 1883, an imposing courthouse was built. Both buildings still exist. The jail, now officially known as “The Old Jail Art Center,” is an accredited art museum with an outdoor sculpture garden and the county archives. The Shackelford County Courthouse was carefully restored in 2004 and is a historical landmark well worth touring.

Today, as a Preserve America Community, Albany’s Main Street is a cultural gem where restored buildings house shops, restaurants, and theaters while the old railroad depot serves as the Visitor Center, Chamber of Commerce and Fandangle Ticket Office. Albany and the surrounding countryside have been officially designated a movie-friendly location.

Citizens are friendly and enjoy local history, fine art and performing. Each year in June, the Fort Griffin Fandangle tells our story.

The unsurpassed big game and bird hunting on area ranches makes Shackelford County a perfect sportsman’s destination. Deer, dove, quail, wild turkey, and hogs are abundant and there is fishing on area rivers, creeks and lakes.
